Old Friends!
We were invited to speak at a missions convention in October, since we were stateside we were able to book other services. Denny went in one direction and I in the other. I went north while Denny went west! Going north is home to me! I was able to speak in 5 churches real close to my parents.
One of the churches was the one pictured, Shady Wesleyan. This is a precious place. It is special because one of my childhood friends is the pastor. I had a second family while growing up. I spent many a Sunday afternoon between church services at my friend Donna's. Her brother Gary is the pastor of Shady Wesleyan. Oh the memories that come flooding into my mind when I think of all the fun we had at her house and she at mine.
After the morning service in October Gary organized a potluck dinner not just because I was there but also because his family was also there! What a glorious time we had together in Sunday School and then the morning service.
The church rings the bell every Sunday morning, in a small community it must be pretty cool to set your clock to the ringing of the bell. When I pulled the rope I was surprised as to how heavy it was to pull. I just think that is the coolest thing.
Recently I took an assessment determining how I connect with God. It is taken from Sacred Pathways written by Gary Thomas. The resource gives nine sacred pathways to God. The choices are naturalist, sensate, traditionalist, ascetics, activists, caregiver, enthusiast, contemplative, and intellectual. There are different questions that relate to what makes you more comfortable in connecting to God. What is your natural bent in feeling close to God? Going to the mountains, sitting by the beach, solitude, corporate worship?
For me one of my highest marks was Traditionalist. I was not surprised. I love to visit what we would call "high churches" stained glass windows, liturgy, Lent services, and the like. I would love to pastor an Assembly of God church based around tradition! Confession is good for the soul!
So to preach at Shady Wesleyan was simply an honor. To ring the old bell, what a delight. I am so grateful for my morning with my friends worshipping Jesus.
