Down through the years I was conditioned to love a certain task in the house. Anyone who knows me can declare my favorite appliance! My mom worked full time yet also took in ironing for the college professors in our town. I remember when she would say to me, do you want to sprinkle the clothes! I would jump to the task. I don't know if it was because I could play with water, be a helper or if I knew ultimately she would say, do you want to iron a piece! I would sprinkle each piece, roll each one up in a certain way, lay them tucked into her laundry basket, and sit basically right by her side. I have a certain affection for my iron! When we experienced the robbery attack, I was devastated when the gang used the cord of my iron to tie my legs. My thought was NO NOT MY IRON. Can't you destroy something else for a cord, like maybe the toaster or the coffeepot!
So with this love to iron, I basically line dry most things which allows me lots of ironing! On Saturday I set myself up in my little corner to iron. I plugged in my iron and sprayed my starch and wa laa! nope! no good. There was a stench coming from my task. I smelled the clothes, they smelled pretty. I smelled my water bottle, it was fine. I smelled the starch and it was normal. What is up? I kept going. Got through 5 pieces and the stench was horrific. I left the room just to get some fresh air! What is going on?
I began to think about not being able to find distilled water so I thought Uh Huh, my iron needs vinegar. I took the iron to the sink and dumped out the regular water and lo and behold out came some brown stuff. Oh ok, problem solved! There is mildew in my iron, Then I shook it again and out came some wings! What! this is crazy. I put the vinegar in the iron and what is floating in the water part? but a big old DEAD cockroach.
Now I know, dump the water out after every use. They find the water source and my iron was it! Denny said, you are going to have to get a new iron, there is no way we are going to get him out of there. I was determined. My iron is new from after our attack so I didn't want to spend the money all over again to get a new one. So I kept shaking it upside down with more vinegar till he came to the tip of the iron. Denny helped me get him out, It was huge!! Oh boy! lesson learned
I finished my ironing still with some smell but I am hoping for the best!
