el día de las culturas

We celebrate "el día de las culturas" every October 12. Traditionally the day is celebrated for Costa Rica's history including the indigenous tribes and the Spanish. They take that day to celebrate their history of how they were founded and who found this country. Since it is a holiday with no classes, we celebrated the day in chapel. Instead of focusing on the founders of Costa Rica though, each professor had their class and students do a presentation on the country where they are going to be serving.

Along with new Spanish vocabulary, they studied different aspects of the country and gave presentations on each. We are really happy when the presentations include the food of that country. The Ecuador team made ceviche, this is one of our favorite dishes here in Costa Rica. There was lemon cake for Peru, cheese empanadas for Chili, ceviche and popcorn, plantain chips and a tomato drink for Ecuador. There were cocadas for El Salvador. It was a fantastic time. We learn so much!
